Recording on the Ropes!

One of the perks of working in a world class studio was getting to meet all kinds of performers, whether they were musicians, actors or …wrestlers?!! One of my really different sessions was a wrestler on the WWE circuit, who went by the name the “Honky Tonk Man”. He came into the studio I was working at as chief engineer at the time, the Metalworks, owned by the band Triumph, and was going to record a couple of songs to increase his visibility…He had some really fine musicians play on the tracks, one of whom was Rick Derringer, of “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” fame, among other hits, and I believe he produced the songs… and I’m thinking..’well that will help a bit, as I’m sure this guy can’t sing…’ Epic fail.!! The Honky Tonk Man could sing, right in tune, and put some real good feel into the song as well…I think it was called ‘I’m the Honky Tonk Man’ and after it was done I had a much different opinion of the wrestling world and their role as entertainers.
